Our Strategy : Exploitation of the enterprise data warehouse

For maximum efficiency the enterprise data warehouse must be structured as a relational database of third normal form. But because the contents of the warehouse will be available at different levels of consolidation at different times, practical problems can be experienced in extracting data from such a structure.

These problems are circumvented by using a metabase, the nature of which extends beyond the simple description of column and table catalogues and data types. The metabase associated with the enterprise data warehouse will have a data value - specific component that is used to both document what is in the database by describing which columns have values at what level of consolidation and is also used to guide the user in the correct use of the data in the database.

This is achieved by registering the completeness of the data by consolidation level and enforcing the correct reporting or extraction level when an incomplete consolidation layer is interrogated. As each data column’s values may be available at different levels of consolidation over time, it is necessary to manage these columns programmatically and in a systematic manner.
