Our Strategy : Populating the enterprise data warehouse

Consolidated data from operational systems or Line of Business data warehouses are used to populate the enterprise data warehouse and it is imperative that the "owner" of the data decides on the appropriate level of consolidation.

This is the same process as used for general ledger consolidation for corporate accounting purposes, although in some cases it may be necessary to present the data at higher degrees of detail. The central tenant of enterprise warehousing however; that the data are supplied by the line of business responsible for its initial creation, still holds. It is only people who understand the source data that can marry the requirements of the enterprise warehouse with the data stored in each line of business system. It is also very easy to break the relationship between source data and enterprise warehousing requirements with even small changes in the business practices of individual departments. For this reason, close communication between "data owners" and the enterprise warehousing team must remain a priority in creating an enterprise warehouse.
